Books
Has anyone read any good books lately?? I'm always on the lookout for new books to read, especially now that I have a ridiculous amount of free time! So if you have any recommendations, leave a message with the book title and maybe why you liked it. You can leave a message on here or just email me...Whatever works for you.
Here are a few titles that I have enjoyed lately:
"From the corner of his eye"- (I think that is the correct title) by Dean Koontz - I just recently reread this Koontz classic. I really liked the characters who could "see all the ways things are"...I can't remember exactly how he put it....but it was really interesting how Koontz mixed some quantum mechanics into this story.
"Blink" - by Malcolm Gladwell - Its a book about how we 'thin slice' the abundance of information that we are constantly bombarded with to from quick decisions. I found this to be a really nice light read. There wasn't really anything mind blowing in this book, but Gladwell presents a bunch of really interesting scenarios and facts. I found the section on facial expressions to be the most interesting chapter.
"The rule of four" - by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason. This book is definitely playing off the success of Dan Brown's books, but still worth the read. Its a sort of mystery that is centered around this ancient text that isn't what it appears to be. Their writing style is totally different from Dan Brown's. It reads less like a history lesson and more like a story. I actually didn't really like how the last quarter of the book went....but overall I would still recommend it.
"The Tao of Physics" - by Fritjof Capra. This book was the inspiration for the title of my blog as you can tell. I really enjoyed this one. It is a comparison between modern physics and eastern mysticism. It took me a long time to read it, but it was well worth it. I found some sections to be especially difficult to read because I have zero experience in physics. There are so many fascinating concepts that really made me question a lot of what I believe. I recommend watching the movie "What the bleep do we know" either before or after reading this book...it talks about some similar topics without the eastern twist.
anyways that's all I have time to write about now....So ya hit me up with some suggestions!
peace out

I just found out you had a blog also, you gotta publicize man! I also have time on my hands and I also play volleyball - crazy! It's cool that you have put up some book stuff on here as well. And here are my quick thoughts on what you put up:
I read the Rule of Four a little while back and, while I didn't hate it, I found it to be a little too sensitive/dark moodyish. And it was kind of annoying because I couldn't figure out how to pronounce the name of that ancient text that they refer to about a million times. So everytime it was written in the book I was coming up with a new way to pronounce it...
I'd really like to read Blink, I've heard good things. Along the lines of a light read you should check out Bringing Down the House if you haven't already. It's a true story about card counters from MIT in casinos around the world. You can read it in about a day...
I just read State of Fear by Michael Crichton, that was pretty good. About environmental terrorists and global warming (which according to the book, may not exist).
I'm reading Centennial right now which is like 1000 pages but pretty interesting. It deals with the history of a small town in the middle of Colorado called Centennial starting pretty much from the beginning of the earth.
And some others that I always recommend: Pillars of the Earth (Fantastic!). Anything by Michael Connelly or Randy Wayne White.
Let me know if you want to borrow, I've got a fuckin' library in my basement so there is plenty to choose from...
Hey i'm just stoked that somebody actually wrote a comment on here! I'm not sure how to publicize...
But ya I totally agree with what you said about the Rule of Four. I still have a few books here that I want to read first...but I would love to maybe borrow a couple off of you after christmas?? I can lend you blink anytime...just say the word...
ok i gotta run
ciao
